PRESS RELEASE

October 10,2014, Indianapolis, Indiana – The Sports Physical Therapy Section, APTA, announces the assignment of the management of its Emergency Medical Responder courses to Cogent Steps, LLC, of Alexandria, Virginia.

“The Section has managed our Emergency Medical Responder courses internally for many years,” according to Tim Tyler, PT, SPTS President. “However, with the rapidly increasing number of courses offered to our members each year, it made sense to search for a firm that has experience in teaching the EMR course, and has the staff to manage the details of each course.”

The contract for the management of the SPTS Emergency Medical Responder courses by Cogent Steps, LLC will commence on January 1, 2015.

“We look forward to this collaboration as a benefit to our members. It represents a fiscally responsible step in maximizing staff capabilities,” Tyler states. “As SPTS grows, we look for the assistance of those who are experts in their fields to support this growth without extensive infrastructure commitments to the Section.”

Cogent Steps, LLC, is owned by Michele Leavitt Weinstein, PT, MS, SCS, ATC, who has been an SPTS and Red Cross-certified Emergency Medical Response instructor since 1997. Weinstein has been the Medical Operations Officer for the Marine Corps Marathon, which cares for the health of 30,000 runners and over 100,000 spectators annually, since 2004.

Cogent Steps, LLC, is an independent, woman-owned and disabled veteran-owned company, serving as consultants for a myriad of related services under Emergency Management, including education, large venue event management, international security cooperation, and cross cutting strategic planning.  Cogent Steps Consultants have a depth of experience providing direct support to private clinics, universities, and other organizations with the skills they need in the area of Emergency Management.

The Sports Physical Therapy Section (SPTS) is a component member of the American Physical Therapy Association, which provides a common forum for members of the Association with an interest in sports physical therapy. The mission of the SPTS, as a component of the APTA, is to promote the identity of the Sports Physical Therapist and to serve its members, athletes of all ages and abilities, the profession, and the community at large through excellence in Sports PT practice, research, education and professional development.
